In 1953, Hank posted his best Big League Batting Mark and Home Run total. His .289 average and 20 Homers in 1950 were his previous highs. In 1950, Hank led the N.L. 3rd Basemen with 43 Double Plays to set a new League Record. The Giants brought him up in 1949 and he hit .280 in 75 games. In '52, Hank hit .260, drove in 67 Runs and smacked 17 Home Runs.
No. 18, Playing For The Batters. Clever third basemen like Jimmy Dykes, are close students of opposing batsmen. A right-handed batter with a fast swing is likely to "pull" the ball down the third baseline, so with this type, Dykes will play closer to the line and in deeper position. A left-handed hitter rarely hits down the third base line and so Dykes will play shallow and well over toward shortstop. Third basemen must watch the ball closely as it approaches the batter, since a right-handed batter usually hits pitches that cross the "inside" of the plate to the left side of the diamond and outside balls to the rightside. - By Austen Lake, Baseball Editor, Boston Transcript.
