Probably the most sensational figure in baseball last year, was Rookie Charley Keller, of the World Champion Yankees. Up from Newark, Keller was placed in the regular right field post shortly before mid-season, and was never ousted. He hit .334 during the regular season, driving across 83 runs with 133 hits, but reached his peak in the World Series by wrecking the Reds almost single-handed. He topped everybody with seven hits, including three damaging homers, a triple and a double, averaged .438, scored eight of the Yankees' 20 runs, and played a flawless game afield. Keller is a graduate of the University of Maryland and is regarded by baseball experts as a "natural."
One of two brothers who starred in the big league, his brother Eugene having played with Cincinnati and the New York Yankees. Billy is a good hitter and a dependable catcher. 33 years old, 5 feet 8 1/2 inches tall, weighs 180 pounds, bats either right or left handed. Hit .263 in 82 games in 1932. He began his professional career with Waterbury in the Eastern League in 1919. 4 years later went to Washington: traded to St. Louis in 1925; sent to Toronto 2 years later, but came back to the American League with Detroit in 1928. Returned to Washington in 1930, but the next year was sent to Boston.
Bob, who was traded from the Yankees to Washington in June of 1951, had a good season in 1952. He has been a hard luck pitcher, with injuries hitting him just as he appeared about to hit his stride. However, his earned run rating in 1952 shows what he can do. First hit the majors in 1948 when he was called up by the Yanks after amassing a 15-6 record for Newark.
