Many Big League teams were after Verne, but the Pirates got him when Bing Crosby called, since Verne's mother was a Crosby fan. After spending 1948 and '49 in the minors, the Pirates called him up in 1950 and he had a 7-9 record. Verne won't be seeing any action with the Pirates this year as he's in the Service. An ordained Minister of the Mormon Church, the young Buc hurler is an entertaining harmonica player.

Hitting .313 at Rochester in 1950 and 303 at Kansas City in 1951, Don is a good prospect to stick in the majors this year. He had two brief trials with the Cardinals in '50 and '51, but didn't make the grade. An Army Veteran, Don started in organized ball in 1942 and has batted in 60 or more runs every season. In 1947 at Columbus, he drove in 9 runs in 1 game. As a Yankee farmhand at Kansas City in '51, he clouted 20 homers.

George spent six seasons in minors before joining Cardinals for 1943 season. That year his record read 9-5 and following season he won 11 - lost 3 and led NL pitchers in Earned Run Average with 1.34. He spent 1945 and part of 1946 in service, rejoining team to appear in 10 games, winning 2 and losing 2. In 1947 he had a good year with a 16-5 average and last season he won 10 and lost 11.
