Bill Dickey has been the regular catcher for the New York Yankees since 1929, coming to them from Buffalo in 1928. He has proven himself to be one of the greatest catchers of all time because of his smart handling of pitchers and his ability to prevent stolen bases with his "whip" throwing arm. Bill is also a dangerous man at bat, failing to hit over .300 only once in his 11 years of major-league baseball. He has taken part in four World Series with the Yankees, getting a batting average of .438 in the 1932 Series and .400 in the 1938 Series. His 11-year record shows the following: played in 1225 games, getting 1434 hits for an average of .322.
No. 13, The Choke Or Chop Hitter. "Rabbit" Maranville is one of the few choke hitters left in the major leagues now that the lively ball has turned most of the players into long handle, or "free" swingers. He is also the smallest man in the league, weighing only 145 pounds and standing only five feet five inches tall. Choke hitters grasp the bat a third of the way up the handle and chop at the pitched ball, hoping to drive it over or through the holes of the infield. Boys are advised against extreme choke hitting, and a modified form of the choke gets better results in the present day. - By Austen Lake, Baseball Editor, Boston Transcript.
