Former major-league player, purchased from Texas League February 25, 1952... entered umpire ranks in Class-C West Texas-New Mexico League in 1948 and in one year jumped to AA Texas Leagu ... played in big leagues with Detroit in 1939, Cincinnati in 1940 and the Cubs in 1944, 1945 and 1946... born in Mason City, lowa, lives now in Port Huron, Michigan... graduated with Bachelor of Science degree from Western Michigan (Kalamazoo) College in 1936... of Bohemian descent... married in 1938, two children, girl 12, boy 3 1/2.



"Monk" pitched in the minors 3 years before coming up with the Yankees in 1944. At Newark in 1943, he won 16 and pitched a 7-inning no-hit game. In 2 seasons with the Yanks he won 23 and lost 22 and was sent down in 1946. The Phillies brought him up again in 1948 and traded him to the Cubs in 1949. As a Cub in 1949-50, he had 6-9, 6-10 records. He spent part of 1951 at Springfield but the Cubs recalled him in July. His special pitch is a "sinker ball."
