It's not easy to condense Ralph's feats into a small space. He's probably the outstanding home run hitter in baseball. He led the League in homers as a rookie with the Pirates in 1946, the first rookie to do so since 1900. The first player in major league history to either lead or tie for the lead in homers during his first seven years in the majors. In baseball since 1941.
Johnny was going great guns for the 1954 edition of the Brooklyn Dodgers, when an attack of appendicitis took him out of action, and kept him out of the line-up for a good part of the season. He appeared in a total of 29 games, winning 11 and losing 7. He worked 152 innings, and gave up 147 hits. Johnny walked 53 men and struck out 79. 1951 was his first year in organized baseball, and he spent it with Newport News and Hazard. He was with Montreal in 1952 and came to Brooklyn in 1953.
Although he had appeared with the Giants during part of two preceeding seasons, 1954 was Ray's first full season in the majors. He came to the New Yorkers with a reputation for being one of the finest young catching prospects in baseball. He can hit a long ball. Appeared in 86 games, and batted .255. He had 51 hits, and these included 7 doubles, 1 triple and 9 home runs. He batted in 33 runs, and scored 26. Started in baseball in 1947 with Jacksonville. He's been in the Giants farm system exclusively.
