This is "Red's" 9th active year with the Redbirds, since he came up to the majors in 1943. A War Veteran, he first played pro ball in 1937 and after winning 17 at Sacramento in '41 and 16 at Columbus in '42, he made the Big Leagues. In '44 he had an 11-3 mark and a 1.34 Earned Run Average. 1947 was a good year for George with a 16-5 record and 123 Strikeouts. He had 10 wins in '48 and 15 in '49, and won a World Series game in 1946.
One of the fleetest players in the American League. He led the League in base stealing in 1931 and 1932. Was caught stealing only 47 times in 160 tries in three years. Good hitter and fine ground coverer in the outfield. Last year batted .299 in 150 games. Born in Nashville, Tenn., December 25, 1908. Once served as bat boy for the Birmingham Club in the Southern League. Chapman was signed by the Yankees in 1928, but farmed out for more experience; came back in 1930 and won a place. Bats and throws right-handed, 5 feet 11 1/2 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds.
One of the biggest men in baseball. In 152 games for the 1953 Tigers, hit .248 and batted in 98 runs, he had 30 doubles, 3 triples and 13 homers among his hits. Walt was a top notch athlete at Connecticut U. before he signed with the Boston Red Sox in June, 1947. Had many offers to play both pro football and basketball, which he turned down in favor of baseball. Was once number one draft choice by the Chicago Bears. In 1948 with Birmingham he batted .359.
