The 1953 MLB All-Star Game - the 20th renewal - featured an appearance by former Negro Leagues pitching legend Satchel Paige. At 46, he was and remains the oldest player to see action in the classic.
Vic hits a long ball, and is a good man in the outfield. He began the 1952 season with the Detroit Tigers and after appearing in 85 games for them was traded to St. Louis in a big deal. He's been in baseball since 1942. He began as an outfielder and has stayed one with the exception of 1943 with Buffalo when he appeared in 1 game, pitching 2 innings.
Ferrell caught in over 100 games a year for 11 years, a total of 1806 games in the majors in addition to over 250 in the minors before starting his major league career with the old St. Louis Browns in 1929. He later went to Boston and Washington, back to St. Louis, and Washington a second time. He caught on six straight all-star teams and in two World Series. He is now assistant to the President of the Tigers.
