Name that player!

Another local boy who made good. Ted pitched amateur ball in Detroit in 1941 and soon attracted attention of Tiger scouts, who signed him and sent him to Beaumont. He was optioned to Winston-Salem and won 13 games in 1942 before entering service. Known as "strikeout king" in service where he won 12 and lost 1. In 1947 with Buffalo he won 11 and lost 7, striking out 138 men in 150 innings. With Tigers last season his record was 6-2.

An acrobatic fielder, Johnny is one of two shortstops in the majors to take part in a triple play in 1951. 1941 was his first year in pro ball and he hit .359 and 35 homers at Muskegon. In '42 he batted .301 for Beaumont and the Tigers called him up. The next 3 years, Johnny was in the Service and finished the '46 season at Detroit, but was sent to Dallas for '47. A Tiger regular since '48 when he hit .290, he hit .293 in '50.

A two-time Opening Day starter, Jack signed with the Tigers in December 2023. "He's extraordinarily talented," team executive Scott Harris says, "and we were really excited to add this caliber of talent."

"Mickey" Cochrane
Fielding Tips - The Catcher's Throw. The catcher's throw is a quick, overhand snap, starting from just above and behind the ear. Because the catcher generally throws from a flat-footed, standing position or a crouch, his throw is distinct from those of the pitcher, infielder or outfielder. The brisk, overhead snap gives accuracy and speed. The throw should be aimed to reach basemen a foot or two above the ground, enabling them to tag. a sliding runzer easily. A catcher's footwork is all important, and he should school himself to be balanced evenly on his feet as he prepares to receive the pitch and never with his legs straddled widely apart.
