Steve Carlton is without question the No. 1 pitcher in the major leagues and among the finest in the history of the game. The names Steve Carlton and Cy Young have become synonymous as in 1982 Steve became the first pitcher to ever win a fourth Cy Young Award, having previously won in 1972, 1977 and 1980. During his 18-year career he has won 285 games and in 1982 with his 23-11 record, he was the majors only 20-game winner. In addition, he led the NL in complete games (19), shutouts (6), innings (295.2) and strikeouts (286). Steve has 3,434 career strikeouts, only 74 ,short of Hall of Famer Walter Johnson's major league record. Steve Carlton is a marvelously conditioned athlete and is expected to continue to set records of excellence which will stand for generations.
In trading for Noah, the Phillies hoped to catch lightning in a bottle - literally. He averaged better than 98 mph with his fastball and north of 90 with his change-up in his five seasons prior to 2020 elbow surgery.
Runner-up for the National League Batting Championship in '51, "Whitey" led the League in Hits, and for the 3rd straight year made more Putouts than any other Outfielder. He joined the Phillies in '48, after batting .312 (1945) and .362 (1947) at Utica. 1946 was spent in Military Service. In 1948, Richie hit .333 for the Phils and was "Rookie of the Year". He also led the League in Stolen Bases (32). One of the fastest men in Baseball, he hit .284 in '49 and .303 in 1950.
