Shot by a crazed girl in June, 1949, Ed was close to death. He fought back and helped the Phils win the Pennant in 1950, hitting .284 and leading the National League at First in Putouts (1387). During World War II, he won 4 Battle Stars and was wounded as an Amphibious Engineer Sergeant in the Pacific. One of the toughest men in the League to strike out, Ed came to the Phils from the Cubs in 1949. His best marks were .304 in '46 and .306 in '49.
Although Robin's 1956 record fell off a little, he ranked 4th in Strikeouts and 2nd in fewest Walks. A blazing fastballer, he led the N.L. in Victories in 1952, 1954 and 1955. Robin thrives on work, and from 1951 to 1955 he hurled the most innings in the loop. After graduating Michigan State College, Robin signed with the Phils for $25,000 in 1948 - an investment that's paid off handsomely.
John was traded to Philadelphia just prior to the opening of the 1960 campaign. He became one of the workhorses of the Phillies' staff.
