Name that player!

The two-time N.L. MVP (1958 & 1959) holds the Cubs' all-time home run mark going into the 1969 season.

The slender righthander led the Texas League with an earned run average of 2.18 in 1965. Promoted to Tacoma, Chuck was again under the 3.00 mark in E.R.A. despite being handicapped by arm trouble. With two years of impressive pitching behind him, the righty was elevated to the Cubs roster in '67. Chuck's stuff quickly won him an important position in Leo Durocher's bullpen. In the 45 games that he appeared in, Chuck won nine and was credited with eight "saves."

"A little more than 20 years ago there was a boy selling peanuts and soft drinks in the stands of the St. Louis Cardinals. Today that boy is known throughout the baseball world as the manager of the Chicago Cubs and as one of the leading fielders of the National League. He is Charlie Grimm, a fine fielder, a dangerous batter, a good manager. He was born in St. Louis in 1899. He is 5 feet, 11 1⁄2 inches tall and weighs around 175 pounds. He started with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1916 and was sent to smaller clubs for more experience. In 1919 he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates where he played for six years, going to Chicago n the fall of 1924."

Back to the Front! Cubs card back du jour...

Billy Williams
Cubs skipper Leo Durocher thought Williams needed a rest. For most players, that's no big deal, but this day off on September 3, 1970 made national headlines. Billy, sitting out a 7-2 victory over the Phillies at Wrigley Field, saw his consecutive-games streak end at 1,117. That then-National League record since has been surpassed by only Steve Garvey.
