Hank Sauer
A fractured hand kept Hank from playing the entire '53 season. In '52, he was voted the N.L.'s Most Valuable Player, blasting 37 Homers and leading the League with 121 RBI's. Hank started in '37 and was up with Cincy 3 times before joining the Cubs in '49. Since then he's averaged 30 Home Runs per year.

Name that player!

Obtained from the Cleveland Indians on April 11, 1965, Ted went right to work for the Cubs and became the dean of the Chicago bullpen. The submarining righthander went on to become the big league's most active hurler last year, appearing in 84 ballgames. Ted was credited with saving 24 ballgames for Chicago in 1965.



The Cubs drafted Omar from the Dodgers' Montreal farm. In 31 games for Chicago in 1951. Hurled 127 innings. Had a 4-9 record. A catcher in high school, and an outfielder in semi-pro. Volunteered for mound duty one day when pitcher failed to arrive. Fanned 17 batters.



Gene put his name in the record book when he wallopped 3 homers in 1 game in 1948, tying the record for a 9 inning game. He got his chance with the Dodgers in 1943 after playing in the minors since 1939. But, after hitting .300 in 18 games, he went into the Service for 3 years. Back with Brooklyn since 1946, he was traded to the Cubs in midseason of 1951. His best year was 1948 when he hit 15 homers and batted .290.

Roy Smalley
Discovered while at Pepperdine College in 1944, Roy has been with the Cubs since 1948. His appearances have been limited by injuries the past two seasons, but prior to that he was Chicago's starting shortstop. He broke into organized ball with Los Angeles of the PCL in 1944 and was in military service in 1945. While not considered a powerhitter, Roy did have 21 homers for the Cubs in 1950, the same year he led NL shortstops in putouts and assists. In April, 1951, he suffered a broken left leg and the recuperative period has slowed his progress.
