"The Whip" was bought by the Yanks for pennant insurance in September of '52. He really came through for them, giving up only 1 Earned Ron in the 16 innings he pitched for the World Champs. Blackie set a NL record for righthanders while with the Reds in '47 when he won 16 straight games. During that streak he threw a no-hitter against the Braves. He won 22 for the Reds in '47 and had marks of 17-15 and 16-15 in '50 and '51.
Joe is a good young catcher. He appeared in 104 games in 1952 for the Athletics. In 1950 Joe tied a major league record for most runs batted in in one inning with 6. He began in baseball in 1945 with Philadelphia. He spent 1946 with three teams, the last one being the A's. 1947 and 1948 were spent in minors, then he rejoined the Athletics in 1950. Hit .327 that season.
The tallest Yankee was the top N.Y. lefty reliever again last season. Steve was credited with 9 saves as a fireman.
