Walter J. Maranvilie, the shortstop of the Boston National League Club, was born at Springfield, Mass., in 1889. He had considerable amateur experience from his early boyhood, when he obtained a professional engagement with the New Bed- ford, Mass., Club of the New England League in 1912. He played such sensational ball that Boston Nationals purchased him, and he joined the major league club in September of the same year, where he has been a great success.
Herman started his coaching career with Hollywood of the Pacific Coast League in '32 and appeared in his last game in '49, with the Giants. He was with the Cardinal chain until the Dodgers obtained him in '40. Durocher was impresssed by Herman's sound grasp of baseball and after Herman managed St. Paul part of '47 and caught for the A's in '47 and '48, Leo added him to the Giants' "board of strategy" in '49. He was in the Service 4 years and attended Utah University.
