Sammy is a highly regarded prospect, and was one of the best rookies in the league in 1952. He first appeared in spring training for the Red Sox in 1950, and made quite an impression on the Boston front office. He played three years for the University of Washington before he signed with Seattle in 1949. He hit .302 for them in 60 games and was purchased by the Red Sox.
Cass was with three teams in 1952, Washington, St. Louis Browns and the Athletics. He was in 22 games for the Senators, 55 for St. Louis and a like number for the Athletics. For the total of 132 games he hit .252, driving in 50 runs. He began in baseball in 1943 with the White Sox. Remained until traded to Washington in 1950. Led American League second sackers in double plays in 1949.
