Often called the "Spark Plug" of the Red Sox, Billy led the American League in batting in 1950 with a .354 mark. A regular without any regular position, he plays wherever he's needed in the infield or the outfield. After hitting .389 at Atlanta in 1946 and .340 at Louisville in 1947, he broke in with the Red Sox. In his rookie year, Billy hit .310 and dropped to .298 in 1949. He's the 10th ranking batter in the majors today.
Only two pitchers appeared in more games in the American League last year than Pete Appleton who took part in 43 games. Pete, a graduate of the University of Michigan, had his professional start with the Waterbury Club in 1926. He became the property of the Cincinnati Reds in 1927 who farmed him out to Hartford, recalling him in 1928, optioning him to Columbus. He joined the Cleveland Indians in 1930, pitching for them until the start of the 1932 season when he became the property of the Boston Red Sox who sent him to Newark. Playing in the minor leagues, with various clubs until the end of the 1935 season, Pete finally became the property of the Washington Senators and has been a workhorse for them ever since, appearing in 35 or more games per season. For nine years of major-league baseball, Appleton's record shows that he has pitched 899 innings, striking out 310 batters, winning 46 games and losing 52.
Playing for Dick Williams at Toronto, Mike made the switch from shortstop to second base in 1966. Last year, the second sacker finished third on the Red Sox in batting. A top athlete, Mike was All-America in college.
