Always had plenty of speed but never became a success as a big leaguer until he got control. Used to be "wild as a hawk". Went up to the Red Sox from the Dakota League in 1922. Traded to New York the next year. Sent to minors for couple of years, then came back and won a regular place. Pitched in three world series for the Yankees. Last year won 16 games and lost nine in American League. Throws right-handed, is six feet, one and one-half inches tall and weighs about 190 pounds.

Bonura, a newcomer to the American League and one of its outstanding "freshmen stars" of 1934, is one of the many ex-college athletes in the major leagues who have sprung from varsity diamonds and gained quick fame in professional ball. He is likewise one of a growing number of Italian-American boys who are earning a place in baseball, men like Tony Cuccinello, Tony Lazzeri, Ernie Lombardi and half a dozen others. A big man with shoulders developed from his college training as a javelin thrower and football player, Bonura drives a long ball and is one of the dangerous hitters on the White Sox, which made such a brilliant start in the league this year.
