Fleet-footed and a good line-drive hitter, Willie topped the Texas League with 14 triples in 1966. The next year, the promising youngster's batting average climbed 40 points and Willie earned himself a berth on the Texas League's All-Star team.
The most sensational fielding in the 1940 seven-game World Series between the Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds, was turned in by the veteran third-baseman "Pinky" Higgins, of the Tigers. On October 5, Higgins accepted 10 chances, including 9 assists, for a series record. He added another record by taking 34 chances in all, with 30 assists, for the seven games. Besides his brilliant fielding, Higgins did some timely hitting in the classic. He batted .333, drove in 6 runs on his eight hits, among which were three doubles, one triple, and one homer. For the season, "Pinky" hit .271, but knocked across 76 tallies.
The powerfully built youngster had his finest season in the majors last year. Mike had a .288 batting average and 16 homers which placed him second on the Redbirds team only to Orlando Cepeda. Although a fine outfielder, Mike will handle the hot corner in '67.
