After serving 2 years in the Army Quartermaster Corps, "Smokey" started in pro ball as a pitcher. He had a 2-6 record, when he switched to the outfield and hit .354. At Roanoke in 1949, he led the Piedmont League in Batting (.345), RBI's (112) and Homers (29). He had hit .320 and 25 Homers at Birmingham in '50 when the Red Sox called him up. With Louisville part of '51, Charlie was optioned to Louisville again in March, 1952 and can be recalled if the Red Sox need him.
In his first season in an Athletic uniform in 1965, Fred was tied for the team lead in wins. While at Indianapolis in '64, the righthander pitched four shutouts in just eight starts.
Bill was playing sandlot ball when a scout for the Detroit Tigers spotted him. He was signed to a contract in 1946 and stayed in the Detroit organization. November of 1948 he was declared a free agent. Dallas signed him, and the Cubs took an option on his contract. The Cubs picked up the option and Bill joined them in the closing days of the 1949 campaign. Bill spent three years in the Army and is in the sheet metal business in the off season.
