Many major league clubs tried to obtain this top fielding first sacker from the Cubs last season, and the Phillies landed him. He has never hit below 292 in the majors, his 1947 average. Joined the Cubs in 1946 after his service discharge and hit .304. Last season he hit .296. Started in pro ball in 1939.
Dale got into 53 games for the Indians in 1954, hitting .283. It was the second time in his career, which goes back to 1946, that Dale has hit under .300. He led the Texas League in batting in his first season, when he hit .337 for Oklahoma City. He went to the Indians at the end of the season, and has been with them ever since. He hit 432 for 11 games in 1946, then batted .316 in his first full major league season. Since then he's hit .336, .317, .308, .290, .323 and .300.
Coming from the Detroit Tigers in 1946, he finished the season with the Athletics batting.318. Last year hit .328. Began his baseball career in 1936 with the Beaumont team in the Texas League. From there he went to Charleston of the Mid-Atlantic League where he batted an even .400 for the season. Two years followed with the Beaumont team again and he went to Detroit in 1939. 1940 was a great year for him, batting .340, leading the American League in triples and tied for most hits. Then the war set him back three years.
