"Bake" broke into organized ball with Mayfield of the Kitty League in '38. He got his first trial in the majors in 1943 with the Browns after hitting .326 at San Antonio in '42. With the White Sox from '45 to '51, his best batting mark was .317 in '50. "Bake" led American League 3rd Basemen in Fielding in '49 with .978. That year, he tied a major league mark for 3rd Basemen by taking part in 3 double plays in 1 game. The Senators bought him in October, 1951.

MY BIGGEST THRILL IN BASEBALL by Charlie Maxwell. Hitting a pinch hit home run with the bases loaded against the St. Louis Browns, August 2, 1951, in Boston was my big thrill. We were behind 7-6 in the 7th inning, when Steve O'Neill, who was managing the Red Sox, sent me in to bat for our pitcher. Satchel Paige was pitching for the Browns, and the count went to 3 and 2, then I hit the next pitch into the center field stands.
