"Defense wins, man," says Derek. "When you play shortstop, it has to be your number one priority." Kinda makes one wonder how good a hitter he would be if offense were a priority. Last season, again brilliant with the glove, Jeter also became an explosive weapon at the plate. His streak of reaching base by a hit or walk in the first 53 games was a team record - by a whopping 24, besting Dave Winfield's 1988 start.
Hector came to the Red Sox from the '52 season, his rookie year in the Majors. The White Sox had him up at the beginning of the '51 season, but after 3 games they released him to Seattle where he chalked up a 16-6 record and a 3.05 ERA. Hector started his career as a Shortstop, but switched to the mound at Durham in '46 and racked up a 15-5 record. He had 19-8 mark for Roanoke in '47.
Oscar Dugey, the Phillies' infielder, was born in Palestine, Texas, October 25, 1894. He began his professional playing with Waco, of the Texas League, in 1913. He was drafted by the Boston Nationals at the end of that season, and was with the Braves all of 1914 as understudy to Johnny Evers. He was traded to the Phillies in February, 1915, for Magee.
