Clem is one of the smallest men in the majors. He appeared in 98 games for the Pirates in 1952, playing at second, third and short. He had 84 hits for a total of 101 bases. The Pirates drafted him from Toledo at the 1951 meetings. Because of his size he was advised against playing pro ball, but he has exceptional determination and hustle. Was signed in 1946 after Army discharge.
Johnny was the 6th leading hitter in the National League in 1951. After playing in organized ball since 1937, he got trials with the Pirates in 1942 and 1943, but didn't stick. In 1944 he hit .358 at Columbus to lead the American Association. Johnny spent more than a year with a tank unit in the Army and came back in 1946 with the Phillies to lead the League's outfielders in Putouts with .388. He was traded to the Reds in '48.
