Birdie had a long and fine career in baseball as a catcher, beginning in 1934. He caught for the Tigers, Red Sox and Indians. He's an astute baseball man and should have a long managerial career. He began as a manager in 1953 with Indianapolis, and last year moved to the majors with the Redlegs. He's a college graduate and holds a bachelor of philosophy degree.
Babe Ruth, the "Home Run King", is the greatest hero the game of baseball. His amazing feats of the diamond are almost as well known in far off Japan as in this country. Born in Baltimore in 1894, Babe played the game as a kid, and strange as it seems, he was a catcher. He later became a successful "south- paw" pitcher, but because of his tremendous hitting power, he was converted into an outfielder. His first contract was for $600. Years later, in 1930, he received $80,000 for a single season, the highest salary ever paid a baseball player. He established many records, but is best known for his thundering home runs. His record of sixty in the 1927 season has never been beaten. He has clouted 687 homers during his professional career, forty-two of them coming in the ten world's series which have given the "Sultan of Swat" another record.
The Minor League Player of the Year in 1998, Eric emerged as a big-league star in 2001. That season, he belted 32 homers, drove in 114 (a record for an Athletics third baseman) and won a Gold Glove. He copped another gold mitt in '02 while setting the franchise record for longballs by a third sacker.
