A "sinker-ball" specialist, Vern had his biggest day in the majors in '50, when he pitched a no-hit, no-run game against the Dodgers. In 1950, he won 19 games and led all National League hurlers in Complete Games. A World War II Veteran, Vern came to the Braves from Milwaukee in '48. He had an 11-5 record in '48 and 16-11 in '49. His favorite foes are the Pirates against whom he has a 13-4 lifetime mark. Vern started in pro ball in '39 with Welch (Mt. State League).
Boston's Red Sox made a good buy when they brought Joe Heving back to the majors two years ago. Heving, who had been in and out of the majors since 1930, won 11 and dropped but three for the Red Sox last year, appearing in 46 games. His showings were mainly in relief roles, as he started only five games. His record shows a better than .500 average against every club in the League except the Yankees, against whom he shows neither losses nor wins. Heving originally started in big league ball with the Giants.
