The veteran first sacker became the Yankees' No. 1 pinch hitter last year. Ray broke up several ballgames with timely base-hits.
Brooklyn traded Gil Brack to the Phillies in mid-season last year and since then Gil has proven to be a valuable offensive asset to the Quakers. Brack had a batting average of .274, driving in 38 runs for the Dodgers in 1937, his first full year with them, and last year finished the season by hitting .287 for the Phillies, driving in 28 runs. Brack is rated by experts as an exceptionally good fielder who covers lots of ground.
In 1945 with Chattanooga of Southern Association Gil burned up League leading in almost ev ery batting department and sporting a .372 batting average. He joined Senators next season, but blistered feet handicapped him. Back in Chattanooga for 1947 he once again had a great year, hitting .340 in 151 games. Last season he hit .232 with Senators in 138 games.
