His record shows nine victories and ten defeats, but he had an earned run average of only 3.61, placing him fourteenth among the league's pitchers in effectiveness - not a bad showing for a young man in his first full year in the majors. "Dizzy" came up from Beaumont in the Texas League after winning the league's most valuable player prize in 1938. He won 22 and dropped only six that year with Beaumont, and off his first-year showing. with the Tigers it is safe to say that he will be heard from this year.
