Ted loves to pitch against the Browns, for in 4 years, he's beaten them 8 times against 2 defeats. The Tigers brought him up in 1948 after he posted an 11-7 record at Buffalo in '47. He had a 6-2 record his rookie year, won 10 in 1949 and 10 in '50. In 1951, Ted's 131 Strikeouts was 4th best in the American League. 1942 was his first year in pro ball. After 3 years in Service, he had a trial with the Tigers in '46.
After winning 55 games in less than 3 seasons in the Minors, Howie made the Big Leagues with the Cards in 1941. He went into the Service in July of 1943, but before he did, he pitched 3 straight shutouts. In 1946, Howie had a 21-10 mark and topped the N.L. with a 2.10 E.R.A. He won 20 in '49, went to the Pirates in '51 and Cubs in '53.
John J. McGraw, manager of the New York National League team, was born in Truxton, N. Y., April 7, 1873. In 1891 he played with the Cedar Rapids Club, then went to the Baltimore Club in 1892, and remained there until 1899. He was sold to the St. Louis Nationals in 1900, and in 1901 he organized a new Baltimore Club and placed it in the American League. In 1902 he sold out the Baltimore Club to the New York Giants. McGraw has been manager of the Giants since 1903.
