"Gus" Suhr solved all the first-base problems for the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies acquired the smooth-fielding, consistent Californian in a mid-season trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and "Gus" merely picked up where he left off. For sheer fielding consistency over a period of years, there probably isn't a better first baseman in the National League. And he can hit, too, a fact he proved again by batting .303 and driving across 54 runs. "Gus" outstanding achievements in his ten years of major league ball were establishing the "Iron Man" record of playing 822 games in succession from September 11, 1931. until June 5, 1937; and setting a new record for unassisted double plays in one season by a first baseman, 7, in 1934.



As a coach, Lee's father always aimed to educate his son on the fundamentals as well as the fascinating history of the game. He still does. "When [the family goes] out to dinner, it's just me and my dad talking baseball," the shortstop said. "I'm sure we bore the heck out of everybody else, but it's a special bond that we have."
