One of the best utility infielders in the American League, "Tom" Carey earns his keep with the Boston Red Sox. Carey played 35 games at second base for the Sox last year, accepted 87 chances and did not make a single error. At bat, he proved his timeliness as a hitter by driving across 20 runs on 39 hits, and scoring 17 himself. Carey was a product of the St. Louis Cardinal system and came up to the majors in 1935, when he was sold to the St. Louis Browns by Rochester. He can play either short or second, at which position he was a protege of Rogers Hornsby. The Red Sox acquired him from the Browns two years ago.
