Came to the Red Sox last summer from the Newark club of the International League in exchange for Pete Jablonowski. John V. Welch is 26 years old, throws right-handed but bats in southpaw style. He towers three inches above the six ft. mark in height and moves the scales at 175 pounds. He was with the Chicago Cubs in 1931. Last year he pitched 15 games for Newark, winning 5 and losing 6. He pitched in 20 games for the Red Sox, won 4 and lost 6. He makes his home in St. Louis in the Winter months.
Officially purchased from American Association April 11, 1953 after working full schedule of National League Grapefruit League games on trial... had fling as pitcher in 1939, appeared in 18 games with Salem-Roanoke of Virginia League... also appeared briefly that year with South Boston of Bi-State League... entered umpiring profession in class-D Evangeline League in 1948... advanced to class-B Tri-State League in 1949 and jumped to American Association in August, 1951... born 1920, Mount Vernon Springs, N. C.
Another member of the Dodger youth movement is sinker ball artist, Ed Roebuck. Last season at Montreal he hurled the Most Complete Games, and tied for the lead in Shutouts and Most Victories. In Baseball since '49 he started his winning ways in '51 when he posted 14 victories for Elmira with a low 2.47 E.R.A. At Montreal the following year he won 15 and had a 2.29 E.R.A.
