"Harry the Cat", one of baseball's best fielding pitchers, coached the Browns' young hurlers in '53. He set a World Series record for Most Wins by a Southpaw in '46 when he beat the Red Sox 3 times. A screwball thrower, Harry had his best year in '48 when he compiled a 20-7 mark and led the N.L. in ERA (2.24), Shutouts (7) and Strikeouts (149).
"Skeeter" Newsome was purchased by the Philadelphia Athletics from Tulsa in 1934. In 1935, his first full year in the major leagues, "Skeeter" finished second to Bill Rogell, for the honor of being the best fielding shortstop in the American League. Newsome played in only 17 games with the Athletics in 1938, getting 13 hits, 4 of which were doubles, for a batting average of .271. "Skeeter" is well on the way toward becoming one of the greatest shortstops in the American League because of his defensive abilities, and at bat he usually manages to come through in a pinch.
Hit .280 in 143 games for the White Sox in 1950. Slammed 29 home runs. Got first major-league chance with Indians, but was released to Hollywood. Acquired by Sox after 1947 season. Brought up for rookie year in 1949. In 73 games, hitting .318. Traded to Athletics, April 30, 1951. Soon after coming to Shibe Park, Gus tied a league record by hitting 7 home runs in 4 straight games.
