Mary's long ball hitting ability tabs him as one of the top prospects for 1958. Twice he's led his league in Homers and R.B.I.'s. Formerly addicted to strikeouts, Mary is cutting down on his whiffs.
After signing Carl in 1946, when he was in the Navy, the Dodgers almost lost him. He was declared a free agent, but re-signed with the Dodgers and was sent to Danville. With a 19-9 mark at Danville in '47 and 15-7 at Fort Worth in '48, Carl was brought up to the Dodgers and had a 6-3 record. Sent to Fort Worth and recalled in '49, he won 8 straight for the Dodgers. Carl started 1950 at Montreal, but returned to win 7 for Brooklyn. His best pitch is a "change-up".
Badly wounded in torpedoing of the "Helena" during war, doctors thought he might never walk again, much less pitch. However, last season with World Champion Indians, he won 20, lost 7 and led league in ERA with 2.43, and his won-lost percentage of 741 was second high. His twentieth win was play-off game against Red Sox which won pennant for Cleveland. He was Indians' World Series hero.
