First basemen should be better-than-average hitters, since first base is one of the. reservoirs for hitting strength, as are also the three outfield positions. First basemen are usually placed among the first four of the batting list, where the greatest scoring strength is needed. First and second places in the hitting order are usu- ally given to fast, small men. Third and fourth places go to hard hitting players like Jimmy Bottomley of the Cincinnati Reds, who can drive the runs around. Most first basemen in the major league båt either third or fourth, like Jimmy Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Bill Terry, Jimmy Collins, etc.



In the majors he has compiled batting averages of .331; .335; .324 and .281. In his rookie year, 1942, he collected 205 hits, tying the major league record of making 200 or more hits in first full season. He led the AL in base hits in 1942, 1946 and 1947. He was voted the American Association's Most Valuable Player in 1941 when he hit .325 for Louisville.



"Ducky" began his professional baseball career with the Scottdale Club in 1930. He entered the majors in 1932 with the St. Louis Cardinals with which team he is still playing.
