This hard-throwing lefthander averaged almost a strikeout per inning for Boston in 1968. Bill was credited with 3 saves to go along with his 3 wins last year as he moved into the Red Sox's bullpen picture in a big way.
Highpockets Kelly was for years one of the National League's most colorful first-basemen. Despite his height, he was an agile, graceful fielder, and wielded a potent bat, driving the ball hard and far in the days of the "dead ball". He still holds National League fielding records, and at the bat set a major league standard by hitting seven home runs in six consecutive games in 1924. Kelly played mostly in a Giant uniform, and spent his last major league years with Cincinnati and Chicago. The Reds named him a coach in 1935, and in 1938, he switched to the Bees.
Bill, who played at second and third bases for the Cubs in 1952, appeared in a total of 122 games, hitting .274. He was on his way to a great season in 1951, was batting .333 when he fractured his wrist in a game early in May. Did not appear in the Cubs' line-up the rest of that season. He's been with Chicago since the end of the 1949 season.
