Runner-up for the National League Batting Championship in '51, "Whitey" led the League in Hits, and for the 3rd straight year made more Putouts than any other Outfielder. He joined the Phillies in '48, after batting .312 (1945) and .362 (1947) at Utica. 1946 was spent in Military Service. In 1948, Richie hit .333 for the Phils and was "Rookie of the Year". He also led the League in Stolen Bases (32). One of the fastest men in Baseball, he hit .284 in '49 and .303 in 1950.
Joe is part of the Cardinal youth movement. He's one of the many promising young pitchers on their staff. Began in baseball in 1948 with St. Joseph of the Western Association, where he had a 16-8 record and a 2.70 earned run average. He was with Omaha of the Western League the following season where he compiled a 14-9 record. He won 16 and lost 16 with Houston of the Texas League in 1950. Then in 1951, Joe came to the majors with the Cards.
