Hurled 2-hitter in debut, 1968. Became 20-game winner for Angels in 1971, his finest season. Was member of 1971 A.L. All-Star Team winning 9 of his last 10 decisions & last of 6 in a row.
Gus Edward Zernial nicknamed "Ozark Ike" after the comic strip character of the same name. A year after he started in organized ball at Waycross, Georgia, he entered military service and was away during 1943-44-45. On October 1, 1950, he tied the major league record for most home runs in a double-header, hitting four in the first game and three in the second. In 1951 led A.L. in homeruns (33) and runs batted in (129).
Ranks with top American league hitters. Clouted .317 in 1948, including 13 home runs and 55 runs-batted-in. Crashed out 18 home runs in 1947 while hitting only .275. Also outstanding fielder finishing 7th last season to Cleveland's Thurman Tucker committing only one error - and, at that, a throwing error.
