One of the chief reasons for the great drive of the Chicago White Sox last year was the addition of outfielder Taft Wright. Wright was traded to the Chisox by the Washington Senators with whom he had spent his first two major league seasons in 1938 and 1939. With the White Sox, Wright proved one of the most dangerous hitters in the league batting a powerful .337, getting 196 hits and knocking over 88 runs.
Much of the credit for the success of the Giant pitchers in 1933 is due Gus Mancuso for his clever work behind the bat. Secured by the Giants in the fall of 1932 in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and became first string catcher of the Club. He began his professional career in the Texas League in 1925, went up to the St. Louis Cardinals three years later, and won a regular berth in 1930. Born at Galveston, Texas. Is 33 years old, about 5 ft. 10 in. tall and weighs around 170 pounds.
The general opinion amongst baseball experts is that if Babe Ruth's home-run record is broken, Hank Greenberg will be the one to do it. Big Hank started as a first baseman for the Detroit Tigers, in 1933, batting .301 for his first season in the major leagues. Two years later he led the American League in total bases with 389, and runs batted in, with 170. He also tied Jimmy Foxx for the home-run crown, with 36 homers. In 1937 he again led the American League for runs batted in, with 183. In 1938 he led the league in runs scored with 144, he was the "home-run king" with 58, and established a new major-league record by hitting two home runs in 11 different games. Hank's major-league record shows that he has played 744 games, getting 930 hits, batting in 741 runs for an average of .325.
