The six foot receiver was acquired from L.A. last winter. Jim's dad, the director of scouting for the Dodgers, had signed his son to a contract in 1962. The 25 year old will see lots of duty in '69.
One of the tallest catchers in the American League. Has a great arm, can field with the best of them and hits the ball hard. Batted .310 last year in 108 games, 15 of his wallops being home runs. Bought from Little Rock in 1927. Became a regular on the Yankees two years later and has been first string catcher ever since. Born in Bastrop, La., June 6, 1907. Is six feet, one and one-half inches tall and scales 185 pounds. Bats left-handed. Led American League catchers in fielding two years ago.
Jack is a great athlete. He attended the University of lowa and is listed in the school's annals as one of their all time greats. He is one of only six men in the University's history to earn nine letters: four in baseball; four in football and one in basketball. He was scouted by many teams but was landed by the Braves. As a football player he was All Big-Ten end in 1949. In the lowa-Northwestern game of 1948 he caught the pass that won for lowa 27-21.
