One of the main cogs in the Yankee's plans to regain the A. L. flag in '66 is sinker-ball pitcher Mel Stottlemyre. Shattering the sophomore jinx, Mel topped New York pitchers in innings pitched, victories and shutouts last year. As a rookie in 1964, Mel started three World Series games against the Cardinals, winning one.

In 1964, Joe became the first catcher in nine years to bat over .300 hit 20 or more homers and drive in at least 100 runs. The powerfully built backstop is also a top notch defensive star.

Many major league clubs tried to obtain this top fielding first sacker from the Cubs last season, and the Phillies landed him. He has never hit below 292 in the majors, his 1947 average.
