A bad ankle sprain caused Ray, a top-notch fielder, to get off to a slow start in 1951. As soon as he was free from that handicap, he caught everything that came his way. Batted .233 for 151 games. Drove in 51 runs. In 1950 Ray hit .301 for 109 games, and drove in 58 runs.

He was World Series umpire in 1936, 1939, 1942, 1945, 1948 and 1951 and has umpired in four All-Star games.
