Nicknamed "Country," because he can hit a ball "a country mile." Batted .281 for 123 games in 1951. Had 115 hits good for 160 total bases. Drove in 64 runs. Hit 4 home runs, 8 triples, 17 doubles. In baseball since 1935, and with Cardinals since 1938. In 8 All-Star games.



Jack was one of the Phillie firemen last season coming in to put out the blaze in 34 ball games. The owner of a zooming fastball and crackling curve, Jack has the reputation of being a strikeout artist. In 1953 at Schenectady, he topped his league in whiffs and repeated the next season at Syracuse.



Attended Boston College 1937-1938. Began umpiring New England League 1939. Purchased from International League in July of 1953 by American League. Hobbies are golf and tennis. Had fine war record in Pacific, rising from enlisted man to win a battle field commission.
