This sparkling double play combination is responsible for many of the successes of the Yankee infield. Phil is a veteran of many seasons with the New Yorkers, while the fighting Martin is a newcomer, having joined the Yanks in mid-season of 1950. Phil, who has played with many second basemen - and can be credited with much of their success, found Billy as his second base partner after Jerry Coleman was called up by the Marines. This may be Ted's year. He has all the stuff needed to make him a Senator regular. In '55 with Washington, he showed flashes of brilliance and hurled two shutouts. Sent back to the Minors for more seasoning, Ted was top man A.A. in strikeouts.
Al was used strictly in relief by the 1954 Giants, as they marched to the pennant and World's Championship. He got into 20 games, working a total of 31 innings. He gave up 35 hits, walked 14 and struck out a like number. He won 1 and lost 3. In 1951, the Giants brought Al up from Minneapolis late in the season, and he contributed 5 very important wins to their drive for the pennant, which they won in an exciting play-off series with Brooklyn.
