Discovered while playing high school and Legion ball around St. Louis. Became a pro in 1944, but entered the service almost immediately. He was discharged for the end of the 1946 season. In 1947 he hit .274. Last season with Sioux City of the Western League he hit .319 and led the League in doubles with 38. A crackerjack fielder.

Bob joined Yankees late last season after setting International League on fire with his pitching. He had a 15-6 record when he got call from Yanks. Early in season he pitched 36 shut-out innings - won his first 9 ball games. Had a sensational ERA of 1.91 and struck out 133 batters in 178 1/3 innings. With Yanks he compiled a 5-3 record. Originally a catcher, he went to mound in 1946 for Class D Radford club. Spent 1947 season with Norfolk.

Pitching Tips - The Fast Ball. Greatest fast ball pitcher since Walter Johnson is Robert "Lefty" Grove of the Red Sox, who makes the most of his six feet two inches of height by throwing overhand. To get utmost speed on the ball, legs, back, arms and wrists must go into the pitch, with emphasis on the final snap of the wrist and fingers. Like all good fast ball pitchers, Lefty's "fireball" has a slight rise as it approaches the plate, a tiny upward curve of; perhaps, an inch that is called the "hop" and causes batters to hit under the ball and pop it into the air. Boys under sixteen should be careful not to overwork or strain their arms in trying for too much speed.
