"Joe" Kuhel is one of the best first basemen in the American League. A fine defensive player, he is also a good hitter. Kuhel's professional career goes back to 1924. He first came up to the majors with the Washington Senators in 1930. He was with the Nats through 1937, when he was traded to the Chicago White Sox for Zeke Bonura. A heavy hitter, Kuhel's lifetime average is .290. with 646 runs batted in. His top years were 1933 and 1936, when he hammered the ball at a .322 and .321 respectively, and drove in 107 and 118 runs, respectively. His lifetime fielding mark is .992, a brilliant mark. Kuhel is an amateur magician in his spare time, and likes to play bridge.
In '53 Al signed for a $35,000 bonus - it was a bargain. He was the A,L, top better and collected the most hits in '55. Al belted 2 H.R. in one inning vs. the A's last year.
For a youngster who only started his professional baseball career in 1951, Dick has remarkably good control. After a fine season with Marion of the Class D, Ohio-Indiana League, Dick was brought up to the Triple-A, Ameriacn Association in '52 to pitch for Louisville. He had a 7-1 record and 53 Strikeouts in 10 games with the Colonels, when the Red Sox brought him up to the American League in June.
