A Basketball star in High School, Howie got a scholarship to the University of Oregon. In pro ball since 1943, he joined the Reds at the end of '44 after posting a 19-10 record at Birmingham. He was sent to Syracuse in '46 after an 8-13 mark as a Red in '45. Howie won 19 and had a 2.68 ERA in'47. Back with the Reds in '48, he won 6. In '50, he won 11, lost 8, and won 10 of his last 12 games. In '51, he pitched 4 Shutouts and was traded to the Phils during the winter.



There's plenty of baseball stars who can play one position, but Jimmy Dykes can fill the bill anywhere. In 13 years in the big league he has been used at every position except catcher, and in high school he worked behind the bat. A timely batter and dependable fielder. Last year hit .265 in 153 games and played at third base, second and shortstop. Jimmy is 36, five feet, eight and one-half inches tall and weighs 175, batting and throwing right-handed. Was born in Philadelphia. Traded from the Athletics to White Sox last Winter.



Although Scott followed his best season with his worst, the Yankees were so certain the real Brosius will re-emerge in 1998 that they traded for him and cut loose their primary '97 third basemen. In either case, he is a defensive asset whose .977 fielding percentage was third-highest among ML hot cornermen.
