As a 19-year-old, Joe broke into organized ball with a jolt when he hit .366 for Phoenix in the minors in 1955. The outfielder joined the Sox last winter in the deal that sent Ed Bressoud to the Mets.



Jackie was the National League Rookie of the Year in '47, Most Valuable Player in '49 and All Star 2nd Baseman in 1949-50-51. The former UCLA football star's first year in organized ball was '46 with Montreal where he led the International League in hitting (.349). He played 151 games at 1st base for the Dodgers in '47. In 5 seasons, from '47 through '51, Jackie hit .297, .296, .342 (tops in NL), .328 and .338. His '51 Fielding Mark is a National League Record for 2nd Basemen.



Playing his first year in the big leagues, the Chicago White Sox shortstop from Venezuela compiled a .282 BA.
