Before Del came to the Tigers as coach in '38, he was a star Minor League catcher from 1911 to '32, doubling as manager in his last 3 years at Beaumont. In '24 at Oakland, he hit .301 and led PCL Catchers in Fielding with .989. Del coached the Tigers 6 seasons and managed them 4 more. He later coached Cleveland 2 years and came to the Red Sox as coach in '45.

He went to the big league from the Seattle team of the Pacific Coast League, where he had shown himself to be a star. He is a six-footer and weighs around 185 pounds. Fond of hunting and spends much of his time in the Winter months with a gun. His biggest year with Boston was in 1931, when he won 18 and lost 11 games. Last year he gained 16 victories and was beaten 16 times.
