In organized baseball since 1937. Has played second, short and third. Hit majors at end of 1939 season with the Browns. With them, and the Sacramento Solons, Pacific Coast League, through 1942. Acquired by the Red Sox for the 1943 season. Remained with Boston until traded to the Detroit Tigers during winter of 1946. With Tigers through 1950. Now with San Francisco.
"Junior" won the N.L. Rookie-of-the-Year Title in '53! He broke the N.L. record for Walks by Rookies (100), led the Loop in Triples and got on base in 24 straight games. A surehanded fielder, he placed 2nd in DP's for N.L. 2nd Basemen. At Montreal in '52, he was the International League's Most Valuable Player.
Billy is one of the characters in baseball. He's a comic, he's sure of himself, he's got a lot of promise, and pitches nearly as good a game as he talks. From what the experts say about him, it won't be long before the youngster pitches a better game than he talks, because he's got what it takes. He's a local boy making good. Billy appeared in 32 games for the Dodgers in 1953, winning 14 and losing 8. He was 13 and 8 the preceding year.
